How to make a feature announcement video your users actually watch

Published · Click & Record team

A feature announcement video is a short screen recording, usually 20 to 60 seconds, that shows existing users what changed, why it helps them and where to find it. The simplest formula is before, after, how: show the old pain for a few seconds, show the new feature solving it with a zoom on the key click, then point to where it lives. This guide gives you that formula, a repeatable production template and an export plan for every channel.

Why a feature announcement video beats a text changelog

Release notes tell people a feature exists. A short video shows them what it looks like and how to use it, which is the part that turns an announcement into adoption. It also gives your support, sales and marketing teams something they can drop into conversations instead of re-explaining the feature each time.

Feature announcements differ from other product videos in one important way: the viewer already knows your product. You do not need to explain the category, set up a problem from scratch or tour the interface. That is why they can be so short. If you are introducing the product itself to new people, you want a launch video or a full product demo video instead.

The before, after, how formula

BeatLengthWhat to show
Before3 to 8 secondsThe old workaround or limitation users will recognize
After10 to 40 secondsThe new feature in action, zoomed on the key click
How5 to 10 secondsWhere to find it, who has access, any setting to turn on

Example script for a bulk-edit feature:

Before: "Updating 50 tasks used to mean opening 50 tasks." After: "Now select them all, choose Bulk edit, change the due date once." How: "Bulk edit is live for all paid plans. Find it in the toolbar above any list."

That is about 35 words of narration, which fits comfortably inside 30 seconds.

If the feature is not visual

Some features are faster performance, a new API endpoint or a permission change. Show the effect: a report that now loads instantly, a terminal call returning the new field, a settings page with the new option. If there is truly nothing to show, a text announcement is fine. Not every release needs a video.

Record the feature announcement video

  • Use a demo workspace already set up for the "before" and "after" states, so you are not building data on camera.
  • Record the tab at a laptop-like window size, around 1280 to 1440 pixels wide.
  • Do the "after" flow in one take. Click deliberately, pause after each result.
  • Keep the cursor still while you talk.

The click that triggers the new feature is the moment the whole video exists for, so it needs to be large and obvious. Click & Record handles this automatically: it records every click's position and timing and turns each into a zoom after you stop, so the view pushes in on the new button without manual keyframing. You can then strengthen the zoom on the hero moment, weaken or delete zooms on incidental clicks, and add a manual zoom for anything you want to highlight that was not a click.

A repeatable template for every release

If you ship often, consistency matters more than polish. Decide these once and reuse them:

  1. Background and frame. Pick one gradient or brand image, one inset and corner radius, and a browser frame style. In Click & Record these are editor settings you can match each time.
  2. Caption style. Always caption. Click & Record generates subtitles on your machine with a built-in Whisper model, so there is no per-minute fee even if you ship weekly. Fix product names before export.
  3. Opening line. Start every video with "New:" followed by the benefit, so users learn the pattern.
  4. Speed ramps. Any setup step longer than a few seconds goes to 2x to 4x. See how to speed up a screen recording.
  5. Export presets. Same quality setting and aspect ratios every time.

With a template, a 30-second release clip is mostly the time it takes to set up the demo data and record a clean take.

Where to publish, and in which format

Export once per destination from the same project. Click & Record exports MP4 or WebM in 16:9, 9:16, 1:1, 4:5 or the source ratio, and shows estimated file size before rendering.

For the internal version, a quick walkthrough for support and sales with more detail is often worth more than the polished public clip. Our guide on async video updates for remote teams covers that style.

Checklist before you ship the video

  • The first three seconds name the feature and the benefit.
  • The key click is zoomed and readable on a phone.
  • Captions are on and accurate.
  • Availability is clear: which plans, which platforms, any beta flag.
  • No internal URLs, feature flags or real customer data on screen. A mock browser frame with an editable URL bar can replace a staging address.
  • Each channel has the right aspect ratio and a reasonable file size.

Click & Record is free, runs in Chrome, Edge and Brave, needs no account and adds no watermark, which makes it easy to turn release videos into a habit. If a teammate already recorded the clip, open it in the free browser editor to add manual zooms, captions, a frame and the right aspect ratio.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a feature announcement video be?

Usually 20 to 60 seconds. Existing users already know your product, so you only need to show what changed and why it helps them.

Where should I post a feature announcement video?

Put it where users will see it: the changelog or release notes, the in-app announcement, the product update email and your social channels. One recording can be exported in different aspect ratios for each.

Do feature announcement videos need voiceover?

Not always. Many work as silent clips with captions or on-screen text, since they often autoplay muted in apps and feeds. A short voiceover helps when the feature needs explaining.

How do I make release videos quickly every sprint?

Use a repeatable template: same structure, same background and frame, same export settings. With automatic click zoom and on-device captions, a short release clip can be recorded and exported in well under an hour.
